Ancient City Anuradhapura

Anuradhapura is a historic city located in the North Central Province of Sri Lanka. It was the capital of the country from the 4th century BCE until the 11th century CE and is considered one of the ancient capitals of Sri Lanka. Anuradhapura is renowned for its well-preserved ruins, magnificent stupas (dome-shaped structures), ancient monasteries, and intricately carved stone sculptures.

The city holds significant religious and cultural importance to Buddhists, as it is home to some of the most sacred Buddhist sites in Sri Lanka. One of the main attractions in Anuradhapura is the Sri Maha Bodhi, a sacred fig tree believed to be a cutting from the original Bodhi tree in India under which Lord Buddha attained enlightenment. The Ruwanwelisaya, Jetavanaramaya, and Abhayagiri Dagaba are other prominent stupas in Anuradhapura that showcase the architectural brilliance of ancient Sri Lanka.

The city also features the ancient city complex, which includes the remains of royal palaces, monastic buildings, and intricately designed stone pillars. The Samadhi Buddha statue, Isurumuniya Temple, and Thuparamaya are some of the notable sites within the complex. Anuradhapura attracts both local and international tourists, as it offers a fascinating glimpse into Sri Lanka's rich cultural heritage and ancient civilization.
